Rules

  • Informal club competitions are held each month at our regular meetings. The season runs from July to May with a winner declared at the conclusion of the season.
  • Points are awarded based on popular vote with 5 points going to first place, 3 points going to second place, and all other entries receiving 1 point.
  • Additionally, 1 bonus point will be given for the most innovative or ambitious entry as decided by the competition maestro. 1 bonus point will also be given for the best beer as decided on by the club's panel of BJCP judges.
  • Some competitions are marked as Collaboration contests. Entrants must brew this beer with another member (or group) and submit together. Both members/teams will receive any points awarded.
  • Entrants must supply six 12 oz. bottles, one 64 oz. growler, or similar quantity.
  • Limit one entry per person per month.

Schedule

July - Tiny Rider
Session beers under 4% ABV

August - Split it Up (COLLABORATION)
Brew a batch with another club member using a single grain bill. Split the batch. Your choice of splitting it before the boil and using a different hop combination/schedule or splitting it post boil and using different yeasts/dry hops/adjuncts. Both beers are judged as one entry. Not a partigyle beer!

September - Challenge Style: Bock

October - Breakfast of Champions (Challenge Ingredient: Wheat)
Brew your liquid Wheaties and challenge yourself with a grain bill that is at least 50% wheat (Wheaties cereal not required)

November - Challenge Ingredient: Burton Ale Yeast
WLP023 or Wyeast1275 - It provides delicious subtle fruity flavors like apple, clover honey and pear. Great for all English styles, IPA’s, bitters, and pales. And excellent in porters, and stouts.

December - Big, Bigger, Biggest - Holiday Edition (COLLABORATION)
Cinnamon, spice and all that’s nice. Partner up with another member and brew a high ABV (9%+) winter seasonal beer.

January - Challenge Ingredient: Alternate Sugars
Get creative using other sources for fermentable (and non-fermentable) sugars — honey, maple syrup, molasses, lactose and more!

February - Copycat (with a twist)
The old favorite of trying to replicate another member’s recipe. New wrinkle this year! - We will vote in October on one recipe and everyone brews it, including the member whose recipe is selected. Let’s get some of the recent award winning beers from club members together and see if someone can make a great beer even better!

March - Challenge Style: English Bitter

April - Ingredient Draft (COLLABORATION)
Grab a fellow Keystone Hops member and put your heads together to craft a unique beer from ingredients that are selected during the ingredient draft in January.

May - Commercial Clone
Brew up your version of a commercially available beer and bring the commercial beer as well for side by side judging.
